Frequently asked questions and answers
Installation and launch
Which versions of macOS are supported?
IP Messenger for macOS runs on Mac OS X 10.1 and later — all versions.
The Download page lists the supported macOS (Mac OS X / OS X) version range for each release (features vary between versions). Download the version that matches your macOS.
Communication
Can it communicate with IP Messenger for Windows?
Yes. IP Messenger for macOS is developed with a strong focus on compatibility with the original Windows version.
It should also work with other compatible implementations, though compatibility with non-Windows versions has not been verified.
Other users don’t appear in the list
IP Messenger works over the same network (LAN). Please check the following:
- Whether you are connected to the same network as the other person
- Whether a firewall on your Mac or theirs is blocking IP Messenger
- Whether broadcasts are restricted by your router or network equipment
To communicate with someone on a different subnet within your LAN, add their IP address or hostname (FQDN recommended) to “Broadcast settings for non-Local Network” in the Network tab of Preferences.
Can messages be encrypted?
Yes. IP Messenger for macOS supports the same message encryption options as the Windows version. All messages exchanged with an encryption-capable Windows or macOS version of IP Messenger are automatically encrypted.
When communicating with other compatible implementations, encryption may not be available depending on what the other client supports.
Other
Is there any cost?
No. IP Messenger for macOS is freeware. It is distributed under the modified BSD License, so you are free to use and redistribute it.
How do I uninstall it?
Move the IP Messenger app from your Applications folder to the Trash.
Message log files must be deleted manually.
